Micropolitan takes the farms of the central valley and the lack of affordable housing in California creating an urban farming hub. Consolidating the microcosms of California into a single block of downtown Los Angeles; farming, housing, offices, retail, restaurants, and learning form the urban Micropolitan. Influenced by the path of the sun, the structure is skinned in moveable growing pods to take full advantage of the sunlight. The growth of the pods supports the urban food hub’s need in creating jobs and economic growth. A bridged marketplace joins the two towers connecting the north and south axis of the site. While below the bridge, the upper deck serves as pedestrian thoroughfare from west to east bisected by the grand stairs to the marketplace. Distribution happens in the lower deck where pods can be unloaded and distributed through pedestrian carriers using the metro system or loaded directly on to trucks to be distributed elsewhere.
Structure, technology, building systems, and codes are explored as design-determinants, space makers, and form-givers in this synthesis studio. Building
typologies, long span structural systems, environmental systems, and electronic media are analyzed as they relate to design development
